Istória Timor (Timor Story) competition

Every year, Timor Aid works with the Alola Foundation to find great stories written in Tetun using the official orthography of the National Institute of Linguistics ( INL). Timor Aid is pleased to present this annual program that promotes and builds the capacity of Timorese authors writing in Tetun.

Every year a judging panel read all submissions and look for authors who use the INL orthography to tell great Timorese stories. Before the end of the year, the judges will decide and announce the winner. The Alola Foundation award a special prize to the best story by a female writer.

Timor Aid will publish the first place and second place stories from the competition.

Istória Timor's 2014 winner

This year’s winning entry in the Istória Timor competition is Loron Hitu (Seven Days) by Jorgino dos Santos. Set over the span of seven days, Loron Hitu tells the story of a young boy living in rural fishing village in Timor-Leste and his encounter with a mysterious character from Dili. Beautifully written in simple but powerful prose, Loron Hitu is a gentle yet persuasive call to ponder young love, big ambitions, and the joys and trials of making one’s dreams come true.
