MEDIA RELEASE
Department of Foreign Affairs
East Timor Transitional Administration

20 September 2001
For Immediate Release

DR RAMOS-HORTA HOUNORED TO SERVE EAST TIMOR

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr Jose Ramos-Horta today accepted an invitation
to become Senior Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in the second
transitional cabinet of East Timor.

These were his thoughts on accepting:

“It is an honor and my duty to serve the people of East Timor. A people
the have suffered immensely, shown enormous courage and tenacity,
resilience and creativity, and yet are asking so little.

Journalists and commentators have written much about the high expectations
of the people. My experience in travelling throughout the country, and in
meeting with thousands of people, tells a different story

They do not ask much. They who have suffered so much ask for so little.
They ask for a school, books for their children, some medicine, a
paramedic, a truck to link their village to the market, and clean water.

And yet the feeling of frustration and powerlessness overwhelms me, as we
cannot satisfy those mere expectations.

I hope that I can contribute to help improve the lives of the poorest of
the poor.
I also hope that East Timor will continue to prove that it is deserving of
so much International Generosity.

For this reason and this reason alone I have accepted the invitation from
the Special representative of the Secretary General Mr Sergio Vieira de
Mello and Mr Mari Alkatiri to serve in the second transitional Cabinet
until independence.”
