Notes on
the Exhibitions
About Jon Lewis
Jon Lewis is an Australian
photographer who has had many one-person exhibitions both in
Australia and France.
He previously worked as a
senior lecturer at Sydney’s University of Technology.
His work is also in public and
private collections throughout the world.
In 1993 he exhibited in the
Musee national des Arts de I’ Afrique et de I’ Oceanie, Paris,
France portraits of Indigenous Australians (for the Year of
Indigenous Peoples).
The Exhibitions
Retratu Timor Lorosae are photographic exhibitions made up of portraits of the peoples of Timor
Lorosae since late December 99.
The exhibitions would tour
Timor Lorosae through public venues, mirroring the newly liberated
country and its peoples.... their continuing struggle, happiness,
dignity, woe and forbearance.
The presentation would
comprise of approx. 60 black & white images mounted and framed
for easy handling, transport and installation. In addition, crates
would be constructed to house the exhibitions for transport and
storage.
It will consist of 2 major
components:
Text for the exhibitions (i.e.
captions) should be in Tetun and English.
The exhibitions would
eventually be donated, along with all negatives and archival
material (notes etc.) to the new Timor Lorosae, in hope it would
form a base for future photographic documentation and recording.
Prints should be digitally
printed to archival standard. 2 formats are proposed:
They should be dry mounted on
archival foam core with white wooden bead and Perspex.
Marketing of such images
should be considered, such as the production of post cards,
calendars and eventually a publication (e.g. UNHCR calendar).
Realistically the exhibition
would be completed and ready to tour in the year 2001.
All work to date has received
patronage in kind from Timor Aid and Kodak Australasia.
