Talented authors named winners of Istoria Timor 2012
Three talented Timorese authors have had a Christmas to remember after being named winners of Istoria Timor, Timor Aid’s annual writing competition, on Friday, 21 December 2012.Ms Zélia X. Vital was crowned first place with her entry Knananuk Husi Akamutu. Ms Vital also received the special women’s prize for best female author. Her winning story will be published and sold through Timor Aid in 2013, adding to the excitement for Ms Vital.
Cash prizes totalling USD$1,500 were awarded in front of around 70 people including the authors’ family and friends, competition sponsors, Timor Aid Board members and staff at the NGO’s offices in Dili:
- First Prize (USD$500) was awarded to Ms Zélia X. Vital, for her entry Knananuk Husi Akamutu. A special prize for the best female author (USD$500) was also awarded to Ms Vital.
- Second Prize (USD$300) was awarded to Ariel Mota Alves, for his entry Entre Mehi, Dezafiu no Realidade. Ariel was third prize winner in 2011, so second in 2012 is another great achievement considering he is still in high school.
- Third Prize (USD$200) was awarded to Joanico Correia Marques for his entry Prezente ba papa.
Friday night also saw Timor Aid launch three new Tetun books, Istoria Kona-ba Nia by Judith de Sousa, Diáriu ba Lao Rai Ida by Máximus Tahu, and Inan Ne’ebé Iha Bosok Ualu by Ariel Mota Alves.
Following great success in 2009, 2010 and 2011, Istόria Timor called on authors to submit stories of at least 10,000 words by 30 September 2012. The competition aimed to develop and promote standardised Tetun language, provides new Tetun texts and creates opportunities for local authors.
Timor Aid acknowledges the Alola Foundation for its support of the women’s prize. Further information on the competition is available by emailing istoriatimor@timoraid.org or calling Timor Aid on 331 2260.
